A Historic Home Updated for a Modern Family
This project was an extensive remodel and small addition to a 100+ year old cute house in Central Boulder. The overarching problem was that the house had been remodeled and built on to multiple times; so much so that the house layout felt hodgepodge and was missing a cohesive feel and a sensible layout.
The fix was a tiny dormer bump out on the second level that converted low attic space into a primary closet and bathroom. We loved this solution because it required minimal construction and improved the residents’ lives immensely. Previously there was one upstairs bathroom for mom, dad, and their teenage daughter. We demolished the outdated bathroom and created two new en suite bathrooms. Now the daughter has her own bathroom.
We worked hard on the layout to maximize the efficiency of the upstairs. The dad doesn’t have to get on his knees and crawl into the low attic space to get a shirt anymore. Now the home has a legitimate, elegant primary suite with a gorgeous vessel bathtub and a separate large shower.
In the main level, we configured several interior walls and windows, overhauled the kitchen, rear mudroom, and bathroom. The old bathroom had three separate doors that entered into the space. We closed two of them off and ironed out the wonky layout in favor of a sensible three piece bathroom.
A new “drop zone” was added at the back of the house where they entered and exited. We repurposed some of the salvaged metal roofing from the upstairs addition into the new rear mudroom for a fun aesthetic.
The laundry room was a ragtag assemblage of old shelving and cabinets. We stripped out the old stuff and installed new shelves and a large storage cabinet that vibes with the rest of the home.
Lastly, we reconfigured and remodeled the kitchen, including a new lighting layout and all new cabinets and fixtures.
In conclusion, ironing out the wrinkles on a charming 100 year old house is one of our favorite types of projects. We erased decades worth of miscellaneous remodeling and design aesthetics and fixed the layout while providing a cohesive style that honors the home’s beautiful historic bones.
